2. Documentation Catalogue The Institute for Sexual Science 1919-33: A Volume of Documentation and Illustrations. Rainer Herrn and Ralf Dose (available autumn 2004) This pictorial documentation is the product of twenty years of research by the Magnus-Hirschfeld-Society. With its comprehensive texts and the number of pictures presented, this project far surpasses the original exhibit. Since the exhibit, additional people with personal knowledge of the time have been found and interviewed, relatives of Hirschfeld and of his co-workers have provided personal documents and photographs, and new archival sources have been discovered. The co-workers, often illustrious guests, temporary residents from the fields of art, science, and politics; and last but not least a few patients as well as numerous visitors of the Institute are portrayed in short biographies. Hirschfeld's Theory of Sexual Intermediaries (Zwischenstufentheorie), one of the few attempts at reassigning contemporary gender concepts of deviant sexualities, comprises the center of his scientific and reformist interests. Many research studies were dedicated toward its genetic-hormonal substantiation. The co-workers' understanding of sexual matters is also presented in order to illustrate how theory was set into practice (e. g. the development of new medicines, the counseling of patients, and providing official medical testimony). Single, extensive chapters are devoted to sex education, sex counseling, and sex reform. These chapters trace the development of the Institute from a primarily scientific to a more public, educational establishment. The Institute and its leader increasingly became the target of conservative-nationalist and anti-Semitic attacks, which culminated in the plundering and shutting-down of the Institute in 1933. In comparison to the exhibit, two completely new chapters are devoted to the missing and numerous collections and to the library, as well as to the Institute's role in sex education films. The volume, which wil be available in English and in German, contains a large number of bibliographic source references and draws attention to points that deserve further research.
