1.2. Pages and picture example

1.1. Topic tables arrangement

The exhibition consists of 86 pages, which are divided into five chapters:
>The Building (5 sides)
>The Personnel (40 sides)
>Theory & Practice  (17 + 13 sides)
   with the subdivision >Homosexuality
>Sexual Reform (5 sides)
>Destruction & Exile (6 sides)

1.2. Pages and picture examples

The pages are assigned to picture examples (294) with a grey background. The picture examples can be opened via links in the small pictures of the pages as well as via footnotes (1) in the text.

2. Navigation
2.1. Side navigation
2.2. Picture navigation

This link leads either to the beginning of a side or to a higher arrangement level.

2.1. Side navigation

The pages can be called over the > headings of the upper horizontal border.
In each case the initial at the beginning of the chapter appears. On the left side is a yellow navigation border with the subdivision, so that from there the individual pages can be called directly.
Beside (over, or among) this navigation field are grey borders with small pictures and links to the picture example sides.
Navigation field and picture borders can be set in each case in the front or background
  - over the  X  into the background (on the top right in the border)
  - over the  ¤  into the foreground (on the top left or right)

Furthermore there are links, directly under the upper horizontal chapter border on the left, which also set >navigation field or >picture borders into the foreground.

On the left and on the right beside the heading of the individual pages are the link characters < and >, with which one can move back or forward in the pages (chapter-spreading).

2.2. Picture navigation

The picture examples can be opened over links in the small pictures of the pages as well as over footnotes (1) in the text.
The illustrated pages cannot be opened independently of the pages. If the Browser window with the page is closed, also the Browser window with the picture example is also automatically closed.

The picture pages also possess a navigation field above on the left. Here the next or preceding picture (chapter-spreading) can be called in each case. Over the link > Text one comes from each picture example again back to the associated page.

3. Slideshow

From each illustrated page the Slideshow can be started over > Start. The picture examples change in sequence up to the end of the exhibition.
By input of a number between 10 and 180 the speed of the change can be changed. Default value is 10 seconds.
The Slideshow can be stopped at any time with > Stop.

5 Emergence of the exhibition
The > Magnus Hirschfeld Society, founded in 1983, is an achievement of the Gay and Lesbian Movement. It is dedicated to the work of Magnus Hirschfeld and the Institute for Sexual Science, to prevent them from being praised in an unreflected manner or forgotten. Research by Manfred Baumgardt, Ralf Dose, Manfred Herzer, and Hans-Günter Klein was invaluable in preparing the exhibition.
In 1992, the Magnus Hirschfeld Society set up the Research Center on the History of the Sexual Sciences, financed through job creation funds. This exhibition was produced by Research Center staff members.
The exhibition was shown for the first time in 1994 in celebration of the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the Institute for Sexual Science shown in the Gay Museum, Berlin. The exhibition was to be seen later in Germany at several places, likewise a Spanish and English version was on exhibit in Spain and in the USA.
From the >International Nazi Persecutee Relief Fund the Magnus-Hirschfeld Society and the Gay Museum upon the request of >Pink Triangle Coalition (administered through the >ASTRAEA Lesbian Action Foundation) has received dollars from the US government in 2001. According to the award letter from the US Department of State the funds were specifically granted "to promote public education and remembrance of the gay men and lesbians who were murdered by the Nazis or otherwise persecuted during the Nazi period."
