  • Welcome to my Iskece Pages

In this page I tried to summurize my knowledge about my city of birth and perhaps the place where I call "HOME" mosly.

    A few words about Iskece

Iskece is the Turkish Name for the city that lies in Western Thrace (Greece) and is also known as Xanthi. Some say the name comes from "Eskice-Older one" whereas there is the city of "Yenice-Newer One" as well.

Yenice was till the 40's the capital of the nome, being situated nearer to the historical port of Bulustra-Abdera and being more or less apt to be the center of the trade-caravan routes passing from the region, Yenice lost its brilliance to my Iskece. Some older maps will still insist on Yenice being the capital of the nome, well here you go: they are wrong here is Iskece with its 80000 habitants becoming overcrowded each day passing and looking more or less like a typical new city in growth: what a mess.

The name of Iskece in Greek, Xanthi has its origin from the Trachian tribes and their once upon a time beautiful princess, thus said and been romantic; certainly there will be a few that would disagree upon this subject taking it to some ancient hellenistic symbol but never the less it is how I do feel it.

Let us look at a newest facts about Xanthi:"The city of Xanthi, seat of a metropolitan and the prosperous capital (ca 40,000) of the nome of Xanthi, stands at the opening of the narrow upper valley of the Kosinthos. The city is linked by bus and train with Athens, Thessaloniki and all major cities of Greece. The airport of Chrissoupolis (almost in the middle between Kavala and Xanthi) provides the air services to Xanthi" (from the Duth University web pages)

Here I got a few picture you would like to see about the regions (I hope to find time to put some of the material I already got).
